Managing Your Website Files with cPanel File Manager
The cPanel File Manager lets you upload, edit, delete and organise your website files directly from your browser – no FTP client needed.
How to Open File Manager
- Log in to cPanel
- In the Files section, click File Manager
Understanding the Directory Structure
- public_html – This is your website’s root directory. All files you want accessible on the internet go here.
- public_html/wp-content – WordPress content folder (themes, plugins, uploads)
- .htaccess – Server configuration file (hidden by default – use Settings to show hidden files)
How to Upload Files
- Navigate to the folder where you want to upload
- Click Upload in the toolbar
- Drag and drop files or click Select File
- Uploaded files appear in your chosen directory automatically
How to Create a New File or Folder
- Click + File or + Folder in the toolbar
- Enter the name and click Create
How to Edit a File
- Right-click the file and select Edit
- Make your changes in the built-in editor
- Click Save Changes
How to Show Hidden Files
- Click Settings (top right of File Manager)
- Check Show Hidden Files (dotfiles)
- Click Save
Tip: Compress Files for Bulk Upload
For uploading multiple files, compress them into a .zip file, upload the zip, then right-click it in File Manager and select Extract.
