Advertising rules for veterinary practices

Veterinarians and para-veterinary professionals in South Africa must be registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC), and the Council’s rules cover advertising, including websites. In practice that means:

  • No misleading claims, and no comparisons that suggest you are better than other practices.
  • Only a vet registered with the Council as a specialist may be described as a specialist. A vet with a special interest is described as a general practitioner with that interest.
  • Discounts and incentives may not be advertised on veterinary services. You can advertise prices or specials on products and non-veterinary services, with a note that they do not apply to veterinary services.
  • Advertising for a service aimed at the public should give a phone number and emergency or after-hours information.

We keep the copy factual and leave the final wording of clinical claims to you. Check the current rules on the SAVC website, as this is practical guidance, not legal advice.

Groomers, kennels, breeders and pet shops

Pet businesses that are not veterinary practices have more freedom to advertise prices and specials, and their websites work hard as sales tools. A grooming salon needs a price list by breed size and a booking link. A boarding kennel needs photos of the facilities, vaccination requirements and holiday booking dates. Breeders need litter announcements and honest information about health testing. A pet shop needs product pages, delivery areas and stock that can be updated quickly, which our ecommerce websites handle.

We built the website for Kings View Kennels, a South African pit bull breeder, with information about the dogs and how to enquire about puppies.

Pages a vet practice usually needs

  • Home: phone, hours, emergency details and booking button.
  • Services: grouped by animal type.
  • Our team: vets, nurses and support staff.
  • New clients: what to bring, payment methods and pet insurance.
  • Pet health advice: vaccination schedules, tick and flea season, heatstroke.
  • Shop or products, where you sell them.
  • Contact: map, parking and after-hours arrangements.

Health advice articles help you appear in local searches. Our guide to local SEO in South Africa explains how.

Who it is for

  • Veterinary practices and animal hospitals
  • Mobile and farm animal vets
  • Groomers, kennels, catteries and dog trainers
  • Breeders and pet shops

Kevin from web design hosting has been excellent to work with for the last 10 years. He handled the design and hosting of our website for Zeek Gold and made the whole process easy from start to finish. He’s responsive, explains things clearly, and always follows through on what he promises. He built / redesigned our site at zeekgold.co.za, and whenever we’ve needed changes or help, he’s sorted it…

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a website for a vet cost?

Our packages start at R1,450 once-off for a one-page site. Most practices choose 5 or 10 pages, at R2,950 or R4,950, for services, team, new client information and contact. A pet shop with online ordering suits our 30-page and shop package at R8,950. A year of hosting and a .co.za domain are included.

Can clients book appointments online?

Yes. We link your practice management or booking system, or add an appointment request form that emails your reception.

Can we sell pet food and products online?

Yes. We can build a shop with card payments and delivery options. For medicines, we can set up order requests for collection, so your team stays in control of what is dispensed.

Can we advertise our vaccination specials?

The SAVC rules do not allow discounts or incentives on veterinary services. Prices and specials on products and non-veterinary services are allowed, with a note that they do not apply to veterinary services. We keep the website within these rules.

Will my practice show up in Google Maps?

The website supports your Google Business Profile, and our local SEO plans work on map rankings in your area.
