What a photography website needs

Fast, sharp galleries

Images resized and compressed for each screen size, so your work looks sharp on a retina laptop and still loads on mobile data.

Portfolio by genre

Separate galleries for weddings, newborns, families, matric dances, products or corporate work, so each client sees the work they care about.

Packages and what is included

Hours of coverage, number of edited images, turnaround time and travel, with “from” prices you control.

Date and shoot enquiries

An enquiry form that asks for the date, venue or area and type of shoot, so you can check availability and quote quickly.

Private client galleries

Password-protected pages or links to the client gallery service you use, for proofing and downloads.

Backed up and secure

Daily backups on the Gold hosting included with our 1 to 10 page packages, plus free SSL, so years of portfolio work are not lost with one bad update.

Who owns the copyright in commissioned photos?

This matters for photographers more than most businesses. Under section 21(1)(c) of the Copyright Act, when a client commissions and pays for photographs, the client owns the copyright, unless an agreement says otherwise (section 21(1)(e)). Many South African photographers therefore keep the copyright through their booking contract and give the client a licence to use the photos.

Your website can make this clear: a booking terms page that says who owns the images and how you may use them in your portfolio, and an enquiry process that leads to a signed contract. We put your terms on the site in plain language. The contract itself is between you and your client, so have it checked by your own adviser.

Photos of people and POPIA

A recognisable photo of a person is personal information under POPIA, and photos of children need extra care. Before you post client shoots in your public portfolio, get consent in your contract or a model release, and take images down when a client asks. Proofing galleries should be private, not open pages that search engines can find. Our POPIA website checklist covers forms and privacy policies.

Pages a photography website usually needs

  • Home: your best ten or twenty images and the enquiry button.
  • Portfolio: a gallery per genre, plus full stories for selected weddings or shoots.
  • Packages and pricing: what each package includes and “from” prices.
  • About: you, your style and the areas you cover.
  • Booking terms and FAQ: deposits, travel, turnaround and image rights.
  • Client galleries: private proofing and downloads.
  • Blog: recent shoots by venue or location, which help you appear in searches such as “wedding photographer” plus the venue name.

Large images are the main reason photography sites are slow. Our guide to speeding up a WordPress site explains what we do about it, and website maintenance keeps galleries, plugins and backups in order.

Who it is for

  • Wedding and engagement photographers
  • Newborn, family and portrait photographers
  • Product, food and property photographers
  • Corporate, event and videography studios

Kevin from web design hosting has been excellent to work with for the last 10 years. He handled the design and hosting of our website for Zeek Gold and made the whole process easy from start to finish. He’s responsive, explains things clearly, and always follows through on what he promises. He built / redesigned our site at zeekgold.co.za, and whenever we’ve needed changes or help, he’s sorted it…

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a website for a photographer cost?

Our packages start at R1,450 once-off for a one-page portfolio. Most photographers choose 5 pages at R2,950 or 10 pages at R4,950, which leaves room for galleries by genre, packages, a blog and booking terms. A year of hosting and a .co.za domain are included.

Will my photos lose quality on the website?

No. We serve each image at the right size for the screen it is shown on, so it stays sharp on large screens and loads quickly on phones. You upload your full-quality export and the site handles the rest.

Can clients view and download their photos on my website?

Yes. We can set up private, password-protected galleries, or link the client gallery service you already use from your site.

Can I sell prints or photo sessions online?

Yes. Prints, gift vouchers and session deposits can be sold online with South African payment gateways. See our ecommerce websites.

Can I add new shoots myself?

Yes. You can create galleries and blog posts in the editor whenever you finish a shoot.
