Membership contracts and the Consumer Protection Act

Gym contracts are one of the most common consumer complaints in South Africa, so being upfront wins trust. Under section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act, a member on a fixed-term agreement may cancel on 20 business days’ written notice, and the gym may charge a reasonable cancellation penalty. The gym must also notify the member in writing between 40 and 80 business days before the fixed term expires, and if nothing changes the agreement continues month to month.

We add a membership page that sets out contract lengths, month-to-month options, how to cancel and the notice period, in the same words as your contract. You stay responsible for the contract itself, so have it checked by your own adviser.

Personal trainers: qualifications and trust

Clients choosing a personal trainer look for proof that you know what you are doing. REPSSA (Register of Exercise Professionals South Africa) is the professional body for the fitness industry, and many gyms ask trainers to be registered with it. If you are registered, show your registration and qualifications exactly as they appear on your certificate. A trainer website also needs your packages (single sessions, blocks of sessions, online coaching), where you train (a gym, a park or at the client’s home) and an easy way to book a first session.

Pages a gym or trainer website usually needs

  • Home: what makes your gym or training different, location and the trial button.
  • Classes and timetable: each class type and when it runs.
  • Memberships and prices: options, contract terms and how to cancel.
  • Trainers: profiles and qualifications.
  • Facilities: equipment, studios and photos.
  • Blog: tips and challenges that bring in searches.
  • Contact: map, hours and WhatsApp.

Sign-up and health questionnaires can collect health information, which is special personal information under POPIA, so keep online forms short and collect medical details in person. Our POPIA checklist explains why. We built Fitness 26, an international online fitness and health portal, so we know how to structure a content-heavy fitness site.

Who it is for

  • Independent gyms and CrossFit boxes
  • Pilates, yoga and spinning studios
  • Personal trainers and online coaches
  • Martial arts, boxing and dance studios

Kevin from web design hosting has been excellent to work with for the last 10 years. He handled the design and hosting of our website for Zeek Gold and made the whole process easy from start to finish. He’s responsive, explains things clearly, and always follows through on what he promises. He built / redesigned our site at zeekgold.co.za, and whenever we’ve needed changes or help, he’s sorted it…

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a website for a gym cost?

Our packages start at R1,450 once-off. A personal trainer often needs only the one-page site at R1,450 or 5 pages at R2,950. Most gyms choose 10 pages at R4,950 for classes, memberships, trainers, facilities and a blog. A year of hosting and a .co.za domain are included.

Can members sign up and pay online?

Yes. We can link the membership or booking software you use, or add online payments for class packs, personal training sessions and programmes. See our ecommerce websites for the options.

Can I update the class timetable myself?

Yes. The timetable is built so you can change times, add classes and post holiday hours in the editor.

Should I list my membership prices?

Most people want a price before they visit. If your rates depend on a consultation, show “from” prices and what is included, and keep the cancellation terms on the same page.

Can I sell online training programmes?

Yes. Programmes and e-books can be sold as downloads with card and instant EFT payments, and the website can host a blog to bring in new clients from search.
